Next-generation Peugeot models to be hybrid/electric

The trend for high-performance electric and hybrid vehicles shows no sign of slowing down, with Peugeot recently announcing that all future models in its performance range will be running on electric. The news comes following the unveiling of the Peugeot 508 Sport Engineered concept at the Geneva Motor Show - a petrol-hybrid model that offers power output of 400bhp and is expected to go into production early in 2020.

The unveiling of the concept 508 was accompanied by Peugeot Sport boss Bruno Famin sounding the death knell for traditional combustion engine performance cars from the manufacturer. By doing so, Famin alluded to the selection of forthcoming models from Peugeot - notably the 208 GTi and 308 GTi which are set to be plug-in hybrids, with potential all-electric editions following.

Should all-electric editions arrive in the near future, the manufacturer will find itself having to compensate for an increase in weight caused by the batteries, leading to a reduction in the quality of handling common to traditional editions. However, Famin declared that such concerns are not a priority to the manufacturer, with motorists - and the forthcoming models - placing greater importance on straight-line speed.

Regardless of how the company plans to overcome any concerns over weight and handling, it’s an exciting time to be a part of the Peugeot family. As the 508 Sport Engineered concept shows, petrol-hybrid technology has the ability to return exceptional performance, with this 400bhp engine racing from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds, and the all-electric motor offering a range of 31 miles.
